When Diman Culinary Arts students traveled to the State House in Boston on April 26, they knew they were there to prepare food for members of our congressional delegation, but they didn’t know they were going to get a personal tour by Fall River representative Carole Fiola.
MASC stands for the Massachusetts Association of School Committees and MASS is the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents. Both groups advise school committees and superintendents and advocate for public schools at the state level.

The five freshman students and two instructors were there for the MASC/MASS Day on the Hill Annual Education Advocacy Event, when school representatives from across the state assemble to visit the State House and advocate for public schools.
Diman’s students’ role was to cook food for a buffet put together by Culinary Arts programs from across the state. Freshmen Kylie Cordeiro, Mikayla Freitas, Ariana Gonzalez, Jonathan Martins, and Nick Mota provided beef teriyaki to hungry legislators and staffers. They were escorted by Culinary Arts Department Head Randy Benevides and freshman instructor Christopher McGovern.
Most schools bring juniors or seniors to the event, but McGovern pointed out that most of Diman’s juniors and seniors are either out of school in a co-op position or busy doing production work for the Room 251 restaurant. “Besides,” he grinned, “We’re confident that by the end of freshman year, our students can hold their own against other schools’ upper classmen.”
Fiola, for one, was excited for the day. “Having our Diman students here during budget week is always a delightful and delicious experience,” she said. “Such an inspiring group of students and educators who can really cook! This is always a favorite for legislators and staff as we get to taste some delicious food prepared by the students.”
