Mr. Botelho explains the saw
FALL RIVER – Diman’s faculty, students, and parents can breathe a little easier at their house-building site, thanks to a donation by the family of the late Ron Silvia, Sr., Diman's Key Club, and the Diman Bengal Education Foundation. The groups collaborated on the purchase of a finger-safe SawStop Jobsite Saw.
The mobile table saw uses electrical conductivity to detect skin. If a hand does touch the saw, it stops and drops into the table in less than one thousandth of a second, usually leaving nary a scratch.
The saw was purchased in honor of Silvia's long history with Diman. A 1963 graduate of the carpentry shop, Ron worked many years in the carpentry trade before joining the teaching staff at the school in the carpentry program.
After retiring from teaching, he returned to the school as the elected Swansea representative to the Diman School Committee. This year, during his second term on the committee, Silvia lost his battle with cancer.
After receiving funds from the Key Club and the Sylvia family, the Diman Bengal Education Foundation matched those funds so Ron's legacy could be honored at the school.
