March through the marsh leads to learning
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Hands-on learning is common for Diman students in their vocational area, but it also extends through to academics too. Recently, 27 students received an experiential learning opportunity when they traveled to the Lloyd Center for the Environment in Dartmouth through UMass Dartmouth’s Spotlight Program.
On Thursday, November 3rd, 27 students from grades 10 through 12 students engaged in hands-on, interactive science activities on their Coastal Field Study at the Lloyd Center. They donned plastic bags over their shoes and tromped through the muddy marsh, discovering and recording information about seaweed, crabs, and other organisms as they walked. Producers (plants), consumers (animals) and decomposers were sought after during a scavenger hunt through the oak hickory maritime forest.
At the Visitors Center, students were delighted to view, interact with, and hold live wildlife and wildlife displays.
Lastly, students used dip nets in the Slocum River Estuary to search for and capture live shrimp, fish, crabs, and more.
The UMASS Dartmouth Spotlight Program participants had an incredible day at the Lloyd Center. Students were enthusiastic and open-minded, and the day was enjoyed by both Lloyd Center Staff and participants alike.
