Safety Rules

- OSHA approved safety glass are required by law to be worn in all shops at all times. They are more comfortable than a hot chip burn or a more serious eye injury.
- Do not wear loose or ragged clothing when working on or around machinery. Keep clothes buttoned or otherwise fastened. Long loose hair must be tied up and off collar, long finger nails, dangling pendants or loose bracelets are dangerous, obviously for the same reason are not allowed. Gloves are never worn while operating machinery!
- Machine shop floors are inherently slippery; spilled or imbedded oil, metal chips, coolant all present hazards. Therefore, steel toe shoes with oil resistant soles are mandatory!
- Never operate a machine unless you have been thoroughly trained and checked off on by your instructor. If you are not certain of a machines operation, ask for help, do not experiment.
- Before starting a machine, be sure all guards are in place, whenever they are removed for adjustment or repair, be sure to replace them when you are finished. Lubricate the machine prior to operating; unsafe conditions may be spotted at this time. Any loose mechanical or electrical connections should be reported at once. Be sure work and cutting tools are mounted securely. Be prepared to stop machines, especially during the setup stage. All feed levers should be checked with cutting tools away from work before proceeding. Hand feed and dry runs to reacquaint yourself with your machine should be standard procedure. Keep fingers or rags away from moving parts. Do not lean on machinery!
- If two or more students are assigned to a machine, only one person operates all the controls at a time.
- If it becomes necessary to look away from your machine or take your attention from it for any reason, STOP the machine, do not go away and leave it running.
- Checking the finish or taking measurements while the machine is running is dangerous and should never be done.
- Never oil, clean, wipe-down, repair, or adjust machinery while it is in motion.
- Do not use your hands to stop a machine or moving parts. (Lathe or drill chucks)
- Use a brush, not your hands, to clean chips away from machines.
- Keep machines clear of tools while machine is in operation. Minimize clutter by returning tools after each operation.
- Ask for assistance when lifting stock or machine tool accessories. More hands lessen the load per student. Stock should be carried with the leading end up and the trailing end toward the floor.
- Clean up any oil or coolant spillage at once.
- Use the correct type and size tool for the job. Be sure it is clean and if it is a cutting tool, it should be sharp.
- Use the correct wrench for the job. Always pull toward you to tighten or loosen.
- Always clean tools and return them to their proper places.
- Files should never be used without a securely fastened handle. Observe caution near lathe chuck jaws. Files are brittle and should never be used as hammers!
- Report all tool damage to your instructor immediately
Remember; there is not a machine built that cannot be duplicated, except the human machine. You came into this world complete try to leave it the same way. If you are forced to make a choice between you or a machine, DO NOT HESITATE… We can get another machine!
It pays dividends to stop a moment and think; a moment of haste or carelessness may cause a lifetime of regret!
