Purpose:
The Health Assisting program provides each student the unique opportunity to gain the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed by healthcare workers in general and select specialty areas within the healthcare field.
Our classroom facilitates a safe, respectful, and nurturing learning environment where each learner can realize their unique and full potential. All students are valued and held responsible for their own learning and behaviors. Parents are considered partners in the student’s educational process.
General Rules:
The student will be held accountable for complying with the following at all times:
- All school policies according to the Student Handbook
- Emergency, evacuation, and fire drill procedures

Attendance:
Please refer to the Attendance Policy in the Student Handbook.
Grading:
Please refer to individual teacher’s policy.
Employability Skills:
Employability skills will be evaluated using the employability skills grading rubric. The student will review his/her employability skills grade at the end of each cycle. Employability skills count for 50% of the student’s shop grade.
Homework:
Please refer to individual teacher’s policy.
Make-up Work Policy:
Each student must contact their instructor within 2 days upon returning to school to arrange for make-up work. If a student is absent at the end of the shop cycle, the student still only has 2 days to contact their instructor for make-up work. The student should not wait until the beginning of the following shop cycle. If the student fails to contact their instructor within 2 days of returning to school, the student may receive a zero for all missed work.
Extra Help:
Extra help is available after school. Each instructor has a designated day of the week that he/she is available. It is the student’s responsibility to seek extra help when needed.
Required supplies:
Please refer to individual teacher’s policy. Students must have all required supplies every day.
Student Handbooks:
Each student must have his/her handbook in shop at all times. Any time a student leaves the shop he/she must have the instructor’s permission and must have the handbook signed by the instructor. In addition, students are highly encouraged to utilize the calendar in their handbooks to keep track of test and assignment due dates.
Personal Items:
Due to space constraints, personal items like coats, sweatshirts, backpacks, and pocket books are not permitted in shop. These items must be placed in the student’s personal locker. The only exception is a small, clear pencil case to hold personal items like pens/pencils, lunch money, etc. As part of being prepared for work, students should bring all necessary personal items with them to shop in the morning. Frequent requests to go to their locker to retrieve personal items will not be tolerated and will result in a point deduction on the student’s employability skills.
Electronics:
Cell phones and all other electronic/smart devices are not permitted in shop. These items must be placed in the student’s personal locker. If a cell phone or other electronic/smart device is visible during the school day, it will be confiscated and turned in to the Assistant Principal’s Office. The student will also incur a point deduction on his/her employability skills.
Shop Break:
Students will be allowed a 15 minute shop break. This is the only time that eating and drinking are allowed in the shop. Shop break is a privilege, not a right. Student misbehavior or abuse of break time will result in shop break being cancelled.
Restroom Breaks:
Students will be escorted to the restroom twice during the shop day, once after shop break and once after lunch. These designated times help minimize disruptions to the shop environment. Students will be highly encouraged to adhere to this restroom schedule. If an emergency restroom need arises, the student must have instructor permission to leave the shop. In this case, only one student will be allowed to leave at a time. Students must walk in a quiet, orderly manner when passing through the hallway.
Shop Clean-up:
Two students will be assigned to clean the shop at the end of each day. Students are assigned on a rotating basis. However, all students are expected to pick up after themselves, keep their work area neat, and be willing to assist with clean-up at all times.
Laptop Guidelines:
The use of laptops in the shop is a privilege that must not to be abused. Students will strictly adhere to the following rules:
- Students will be assigned a laptop. Students must only use the laptop he/she has been assigned.
- Students must login to the laptop using only his/her assigned username and password. The student should never assume the username and password of another student.
- Laptops are only to be used for shop related assignments and projects. Internet searches and printing of any material that is not related to a shop assignment (ex. music lyrics, prom dress styles, etc.) is not permitted.
- Students may complete/print academic assignments only with instructor permission.
- Food and drinks must be kept away from the laptops at all times.
- Students must handle the laptops with care to avoid damage. Damage to the laptop may result in the student having to pay replacement costs.
- Laptops should be returned to the cart once finished using them. They should not be left on or inside the student’s desk.
- Students are to inform the instructor when a problem develops with a laptop so it may be immediately referred for service.
- Students must abide by all other guidelines according to the Network and Internet Acceptable Use Policy detailed in the student handbook.
If a student does not comply with any of these rules, the student may lose his/her laptop privileges and will be subject to disciplinary action.
Shop Equipment and Supplies:
Shop equipment and supplies are an integral part of the learning process. All shop equipment, simulation kits, anatomical models, and mannequins must be handled with care to avoid damage. Shop property must not be defaced or vandalized. Equipment and supplies may only be used once the student has received proper training. The student must have instructor permission before using any shop equipment or supplies. The student must not be wasteful in the use of supplies.
Shop Safety:
Maintaining instructor and student safety is a priority. Students are trained in general safety principles, fire procedures, and evacuation protocols on an annual basis. Students must pass a written safety test with a minimum grade of 80 every year. All students must complete the OSHA 10-hour General Safety course in the freshman year. Safety principles are emphasized during all skill demonstrations. Students must practice safety principles while performing all skills. Understanding and application of safety principles are assessed during each skill/competency evaluation. All students are expected to be aware of his/her surroundings and must report unsafe conditions immediately. All injuries, even those that are minor, must be reported to the instructor immediately.
Bloodborne Pathogens and Personal Protective Equipment:
Healthcare workers are at an increased risk of occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens. Students are trained in infection control techniques and standard precautions according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines. According to standard precautions, every body fluid is considered to be potentially infectious material and every person is considered to be a potential source of infection. Standard precautions must be used in any situation where a student may contact blood or body fluids. All personal protective equipment (PPE) is supplied by the school. Students must wear the required PPE any time there is a potential for contact or splashing/spraying of body fluids. Each student is issued a pair of safety glasses and is expected to have his/her safety glasses in shop every day. Students are trained in aseptic handwashing technique. Proper handwashing is the most effective way to prevent the spread of infection. Infection control principles are emphasized during all skill demonstrations. Students must practice infection control techniques while performing all skills. Understanding and application of infection control principles are assessed during each skill/competency evaluation.
