The Dental Assisting Program trains and educates students to be competent in Dental Assisting skills. The skills of a Dental Assistant are varied and challenging with a wide range of tasks that require interpersonal and technical skills. Some of the specific tasks are: taking and developing dental radiographs (x-rays), helping patients feel comfortable during and after treatment, assisting the dentist during a variety of treatment procedures, interviewing the patient about medical conditions, taking blood pressure, pulse and temperature, preparing and sterilizing instruments and equipment, teaching patients good home care practices, performing dental office skills, making impressions of patient's teeth and creating mouth guards.
The Dental Assisting Program also offers students the opportunity to take the Dental Assisting National Board Radiation and Safety Exam, which is required to expose radiographs on patients.
The curriculum for the Dental Assisting Program includes classroom work in dental and health sciences, radiology, medical emergencies, infection control, dental specialties, dental materials, and office management. Students receive intense hands-on training in the dental clinic at Diman, as well as their clinical rotations at local dental offices through their Co-op externships are offered during their senior year.
The course requirements consist of average to above average grades in science and English. Also, a good degree of manual dexterity and a desire to work with people is necessary. Well-trained Dental Assistants have always been in great demand. The average dentist usually employs two to three Dental Assistants, therefore creating an excellent job outlook. Career opportunities can include flexible hours, with part-time and full-time employment.
