Reading Across Diman

With reports by Librarian Mr. Rioux

House and Mill Carpentry sophomore Kevin Medeiros is one of the many Diman students who participated in the Read Across America Day

"NEA's Read Across America" was observed on Wednesday, March 2. The purpose of this event was to focus the country's attention on the importance of motivating children to read, to help them master basic skills and to celebrate the birth of Thedore Geisel (Dr. Seuss). We at Diman joined groups around the country who celebrated this observance.

Stephen D. Krashen, in his book The Power of Reading: Insights from the Research, states that in-school free reading programs "provide some of the clearest evidence for the power of reading." In-school free reading positively impacts student reading comprehension, vocabulary development, grammar test performance, writing and oral language ability.

We observed "Read Across America" by holding a DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) session on March 2nd from 2:00-2:20 P.M. Everyone at Diman (students, faculty, administrators, clerical staff, maintenance staff, etc.) stopped what they were doing and read for 20 minutes (2:00-2:20 P.M.). Everyone selected something to read ahead of time and the choice of material was left to the individual (books, magazines, newspapers, etc.).

The library has a large selection of reading materials that students may borrow. The library is open daily from 7:00 A.M. to 3:00 P.M.

The "Read Across America" program began as a celebration of Dr. Seuss' birthday and it is our hope to make this an annual event to help promote Literacy and Reading for Fun!
