Looking Back at Freshmen Choices: Did you Pick the "Perfect" Shop?

by Kelly Carreiro '09

Diman Regional is known for its vocational trade opportunities and the various shops that lead to each career path. Most students that attend Diman come in as freshmen, clueless about what they're going to do for the rest of their lives. On the other hand, some come in knowing exactly what shop they want, but in the end don't choose it. The shop that a freshman picks at Diman serves as a foundation for all of the hard work they will endure when they complete high school and start working right away. For others, this foundation serves as basis for their college career.

A controversial question for many Diman students is if they picked the right shop during their freshmen year. Whether they were afraid they would get ridiculed, their parents forced them into another career path, or they didn't get in to their shop of choice is really the question: Did I end up in the right one? The truth is, the shop you choose should be something you want to specialize in now. For example, let's say a male in Carpentry has an aspiring dream of becoming a doctor, but spends his entire high school career focusing on the carpentry trade. He will never be exposed to the medical field until his college years. Freshman should pay particular attention to this matter, because the shop that they choose this year will be the trade they will spend the next four years specializing in. Unless you plan on transferring into Dental or another shop during sophomore year, I suggest choosing the shop you as a person are truly interested in and would like to learn more about.
