Health Watch: Tanning and Skin Cancer

By Evan Ladeira ‘10

Prom season is here and around school, people are showing up with that sun-kissed glow. The most common method of tanning before beach season is to head to a tanning booth. But are you thinking of the risks? When tanning in a booth, the major risk is skin cancer. Luckily, dermatologists have created safe way to tan and have come up with self-bronzing lotions and spray-tanning.

Self bronzing is a cream that you apply to the skin one to two times a day. After a week or two you will see your skin turning tan and it will look sun kissed.

The other way to get tan and be safe is spray-tanning. This method is used by most celebrities who want to keep their skin glowing, including Paris Hilton. But you risk clogging your pores. To keep your skin looking glamorous, use spray tanning and clean your pores daily. Remember when you head outside that tanning is only for darkening your skin and provides no protection form the sun, so you should also use a SPF rated sun lotion. Here is a list of some of the tanning lotions that I have tried, and the results.

1) Neutrogena Instant Bronze, Sunless Tanner and Bronzer In One, Deep:
I'm a big believer in this product. It does more than one thing. This is a sunless tanner and bronzer in one that's really affordable, it works instantly.

2) Clarins Sheer Bronze Tinted Self Tanning For Legs:
This blocks pores on your body and face and can create infected pores. Definitely not worth the $29.50 Ckarins asks for.

3) St. Tropez Tanning Essentials Mousse Tanning System:
This is an expensive Tanning lotion but you get the full effect of a complete tanning system in a cream. This is what I trust the most.

4) Soleil Flash Bronzer Self-Tanning Face Gel Skincare by Lancome:
This product delivers a medium-bronze shade in under an hour. It contains pure vitamin E. This really works but becomes expensive if you keep buying it.

5) Shiseido Protective Tanning Face Cream:
Gentle and designed specifically to deliver a facial tan. Works well on Face only. Use another tanning lotion for the body.

6) Bio-Tan Sunless Tanning Gel:
The most expensive brand on this list, Bio-Tan Sunless Tanning Gel by Cellex uses natural sugars and amino acids products. It also contains a light moisturizer. Tan lasts for three days before requiring re-application of the product.

7) Coppertone Oil-Free Sunless Tanning Lotion:
If you want to go really dark in one application, use this overnight. Have a date tomorrow, want to look tan? Use this overnight, but sleep on cheap dark sheets, not your pure white Egyptian sheets.
