Restaurant Review: Spring Primavera

By Lyjill Horton ‘08

Spring- Primavera is located at 118 Main Rd in Tiverton, RI. When reviewing a restaurant, I believe that it is the responsibility of the critic to be completely honest. A friend once told me that there was excellent steak at a restaurant called Primavera. I now know that she is not a friend, she is just a prankster. Although my dinner at Primavera started out well, it plummeted halfway through appetizers.

Service is probably one of the most important things at a restaurant. My family and I went on a Tuesday night and there was one bartender, one waiter, one cook, and unfortunately these three positions were filled by the same guy. This being the case, everything was kind of slow. We were one of three large parties that the poor guy was trying to accommodate. He never asked us if everything was okay with our food, or if we needed refills on our drinks, which is his job.

The appetizers came about ten minutes after we ordered them. We ordered calamari, fried shrimp, and steamed little necks. The calamari was processed somewhere else, and heated there, but still not that bad. The fried shrimp was probably the best because it had a new flavor, and it was fresh. The steamed littlenecks, however, were the worst. They were old and overcooked. If we had taken the appetizers as an omen, we would have been spared the next forty minutes of prodding at the food in front of us that, bottom line, we really didn’t want.

For my meal, I ordered a sirloin steak cooked medium well with ham and potatoes. I received the sirloin that my father ordered, which was medium rare. Halfway through I realized that there was way too much pink, and decided that I was never coming to this restaurant again.

The restaurant’s main problem was a shortage of staff. I am sure that if I had gone on a Friday night, that the staff would have been sufficient to improve my dining experience. Other problems included how the food was prepared and served. For example, when we arrived we were served drinks and bread. The bread basket was filled with toasted and non toasted bread, but we never received bread plates. Small inconveniences like these add up.

I would rate the restaurant 2 out of 5 stars on that particular visit. I intend to go back again on a busier night to see if that makes a difference. Hopefully you will have a better experience if you venture to Primavera.
