Next School Year Begins WHEN?!

By Josh Franca ‘09

The 2007-2008 school year calendar was recently released, along with the news that school will begin early this fall: in August!

Many area schools have been following this early-opening schedule for years, but for Diman, it will be a new start date. Here are the details: the year will begin for teachers only on Tuesday, August 28th. The following day, Wednesday, August 29th, A-week students will report to Academics to meet their teachers, receive textbooks, and review classroom policies, while B-Week students will report to their shops. On Thursday, August 30th, B-Week students will report to Academics while A-Week students report to their shops. There will be NO SCHOOL on Friday, August 30th.

So how did the news go over?

We interviewed some students and teachers in the hallways of Diman, and here’s what they had to say:

“I think it’s good for us teachers, because we get to meet our A week and B week students right away, and we get to meet everyone at the same time. It’s not that much earlier. If school started much earlier, like two weeks earlier, then it might cut into our summer vacation. But other than that, it’s convenient.”
- Ms. Mora, Biology Teacher

"I think that starting school early is a good idea if we get out early too. During the middle of the summer you kind of wish school was back in session so you can see all your friends again, and start another year. I can’t wait to be a junior.”
- Jessica Moniz, Metal Fabrication and Welding, ‘09

“I think starting school early is a bad thing because we will end up having a shorter summer. Another reason is because kids normally get ready to go back to school in August, when it’s still a month before school starts. Now school starts in August.”
- Jessica Rogers, HVAC ‘10

“I think that starting school early is a good thing. I’m going to be a senior and besides the fact that I’ll be getting out in May, if we start earlier, seniors will get out even earlier. Even though the summer will be short, it will pay off eventually.”
- Samantha Araujo, Electronics Technology, ‘08
