A Day We Will Never Forget: 'World Trade Center'

By the time this article is printed, this movie will be out of theaters and in the "just in bin" at stores. But the subject of this movie has touched all of our lives in one way or another. The movie I am talking about is World Trade Center.

Nicholas Cage plays John McLoughlin, a Port Authority Officer that is considered a hero amongst his peers for his selfless action during the first attack on the Trade Towers in 1993. When the first plane strikes the towers on September 11, 2001, McLoughlin is ordered to evacuate the North Tower, which will later be the first to fall. When the towers collapse, McLoughlin and his partner Antonio Rodrigues (Armando Riesco) are trapped beneath a mess of concrete and mangled steel. But the movie does not take place in a pile of rubble beneath where these great towers once stood. It focuses more on the families of the trapped officers.

The movie can be emotional, especially during the scenes of dialogue between McLoughlin and Rodrigues when they are trapped. The most moving part is after Cage's character is taken to the hospital and he sees his wife, played by Maria Bello, for the first time. He takes off his ventilator and says, "You kept me alive." This movie is about the will to survive, and never giving up hope.

I truly hope the world will never forget the horrors that occurred on September 11th, 2001. Thanks to movies like this, we never will. Afterthought: Only 20 people were pulled from the rubble of the World Trade Center alive. John McLoughlin and Antonio Rodrigues were numbers 18 & 19.
