At the School Committee Meeting of June 22, 2006, the following grading policy was adopted: "Students whose average in any course for the 1st or 2nd Trimester is below 65 will be issued a letter grade of "F" as a report card grade. The teacher will keep a corresponding numerical average in his/her grade book that will equate the letter grade of "F" to a numerical grade. The student shall be notified by the teacher as to the TRUE numerical grade and shall be allowed to make-up any missed work, and/or do extra work, to increase the numerical average. The student will have until the Mid-Term Progress Report due date for teachers to complete and submit the assigned work. The teacher will evaluate the work and submit a re-calculated numerical grade for the student to the Assistant Superintendent-Director/Principal. The re-calculated numerical grade will be published when report cards are issued for the subsequent trimester. Additionally, each student who receives a letter grade of "F" will have a letter sent to his parent/guardian's home from the Assistant Superintendent-Director/Principal explaining this policy and setting the date for work to be submitted. This policy will not be in force for grades issued during the 3rd Trimester." What does this policy mean to you? This policy means that ALL teachers who have students failing class during the 1st and/or 2nd Trimester will issue a grade of "F" for a Trimester Report Card Grade rather than the failing numerical grade. The teacher will notify the student as to the TRUE numerical failing average for the Trimester, and then inform the student that he/she can do make-up or extra work to raise the numerical average. The work is then issued by the teacher to the student notifying the student as to the due date. All work done by the student must be completed and submitted to the teacher by the subsequent Mid-Term Progress Report due date for TEACHERS. The student's parents will be sent a letter from my office explaining the grade on the report card and what the student has the opportunity to do to replace the "F" with a numerical grade. The teacher will evaluate the work done by the student and submit a revised numerical grade to me. Once the grade has been submitted, the student's grade of "F" will be replaced with the numerical grade and be published on the report card. This policy is for the 1st and 2nd Trimester only. This policy does not apply to courses that normally grade students with a Grade of "P" or "F". |
