Spotlight at Diman

In recognition of the consistent excellence of our program and of our students, every Spotlight graduate who enrolls at UMass Dartmouth is automatically admitted into the University Honors Program.

Spring calendar- March 6 - May 17, 2008 the program meets on the UMASS Dartmouth campus from 3:15 to 5:30 p.m. each Thursday. Students who are eligible must be in good academic standing and in grades 10-12. Students attend lectures, mini courses and a field trip culminating at Harvard University. This provides an invaluable learning opportunity, and the chance to develop the skills they'll need for college. Diman's liaison is Liz Jonsson. UMASS Dartmouth's Director is Dr. William Nelles. March 6/ How to Burn the Candle at Both Ends without Burning Out
Norm Bossio, creator of the PBS special "Staying Motivated" on the Deck of the Titanic shares the secrets of successful communication and stress management through humor.

March 13/ You Are What You Write
Master graphoanalyst and BCC instructor Janice Warren explains what your own handwritings reveals about your character and personality, and offers some tips for analyzing the writings and drawings of your friends and family.

March 20/ Teens and the Law
Roger Williams University Law Professor Alex Ruskell discusses controversial court cases, focusing on current legal issues that involve high school students.

March 22 to April 12/ Take one 4-week Mini-Course

  • Art - Joanne Dorothy directs four sessions of artistic experimentaiton in drawing, paiting, sculpture, design, and anything else interesting that you can talk her into.
  • Digital Photography - Take better pictures with some expert tips from Liz Tache and learn how to use Adobe Photoshop in a UMass computer lab to make those pictures spectacular. Spotlight can provide you with a camera or you can use your own.
  • International Film Festival - Spotlight Program Coordinator Trace Holmes and group leader Liz Jonsson will introduce a selection of classic films (bring your own snacks if you like -- you know the popcorn will always be fresh and free!)
  • Yoga - Build your mental, physical, and emotional strength and flexibility with yoga instructor Tricia McDonald; find more info at her web site.
  • Guerrilla Theater - Develop an original theatre piece, from playwriting to auditions to rehearsals to performance to videotaping, with theatre director Jarrad Nunes.
  • Handwriting Analysis - Want to learn more? Janice Warren gets into the details and shows you how to become grapho analyst who can read the personalities of your friends.

May 1/ Art's Coffeehouse
Singer/guitarist Art Tebbetts talks with students about the challenges and opportunities that beginning musicians face, plays a few tunes, and welcomes some musical guests.

May 8/ Jihad and Middle Easter Terrorism for Dummies
UMD History Professor Brian Williams traces the impact of the US and Soviets invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq for the international jihadi brotherhood know as "al Qaeda". The talk will include photographs and video from Brian's current field research in Afghanistan.

May 15/ A Survivor's Story
Holocaust survivor Abraham Weber shares the terrifying and inspiring narrative of his escapes from the Nazis and the Soviets during World War II.

May 16, Friday/ Field Trip to Harvard University
