Diman Alumni Newsletter (February 2008)

New Business

Final preparation for the upcoming Alumni vs. Varsity hockey game was discussed.

A complete financial report was presented to the attending members by Dennis.

Please note: The date for the Golf Tournament is June 14, not June 16, as reported in the last news letter. Sorry for the error.

An updated list of class rings was also presented.

Hockey

The Alumni vs Varsity hockey game is set for Feb 23, 2008 @6:30 PM at Driscoll Rink on Elsbree Street in Fall River. If you are a hockey player who hasn't been contacted yet or who would like to play, contact Tom Roderick for details or to see if there is room available.

This is one of our major fund raisers , and Tom does a terrific job organizing it. However he needs your help in collecting prizes for a raffle. Any donation is welcome (hockey sticks, helmets, shirts, P-Bruin or B-Bruin tickets Etc.) You may either contact an Alumni officer to pick up the prize, or bring it to the game. We usually have a good turnout, but more advertising would be a big help. Tell your friends and family, it's for a great cause. More details will be in the Jan. newsletter.

Scholarships

We are accepting scholarship applications until April 2008. If you know of a graduating Senior wishing to further their education, please encourage them to apply for this award. Scholarship forms and necessary information can be picked up at the school. Creating and awarding these scholarships was the main purpose behind the formation of the Alumni Association and we are very proud of the success of many of our winners

Thank You

We would like to give a special thank you to Arthur and Carol Messier for their generous donation in the memory of their friend Phil Pelletier

Scholarship Committee

The scholarship committee is comprised of dedicated alumnus wishing to take on the responsibility of awarding scholarships to deserving seniors. Any alumnus wishing to join this committee is welcome. Please contact us for more information. All committee members will receive a packet of all scholarship applications to study and rank. We then hold a special meeting to finalize and approve the choices. You may also choose to attend the reception in the spring when scholarships are awarded in order to meet the recipient.

Golf Tournament

The Golf Tournament will be held on June 14, 2008. If you wish to play this year, think about signing up early. 2007's tournament was sold out, and was one of our successful ones yet. More details will follow soon.

Car Show

Winter is the time most classic cars are put in storage, owners do most of the work on them. If you're an owner of a classic car, truck or motorcycle filling out your 2008 car show calendar, please reserve Sept 14, 2008 for the Diman car show. The 2007 show had a great turnout, and word of mouth is making the Diman show continue to grow year after year. Start planning now. More details will follow soon.

Class Rings

The DAA is continually collecting school rings from all years. We are having a display case built which will house the rings, along with the owner's name. We have had a good response so far, with 46 rings collected so far, with our earliest ring being from 1935. So far, the 1960's and the 1970's are complete. We need a 1950 and a 1981 ring to complete these respective decades. If you have a ring or know some one who has a ring, please contact Tom. He has an updated list of all the rings collected so far. Please do not accept/donate a ring before you check to see if is required. We do not need duplicates.

Memorial Scholarships

If any person or group is interested in setting up a scholarship in someone's memory, and would like some information on how to do so, please contact Tom or Dennis. Please note: the Alumni Association is a completely separate entity from the school. Money sent to the school in the form of donations does not go to the alumni association. We have our own accounts and scholarship selection process. If you would like donated money to be given to the Alumni Association to be awarded as scholarships, you need to specify us.

Website

The Diman website has been upgraded this year, with many new features and links added. School happenings, sport schedules and results, upcoming events, and links to related pages including the Alumni page are included. Simply type in www.dimanregional.org to access all this information. Check it out, it's great.

Meetings

A reminder, all meetings are held on the first Thursday of every month, except during the summer, and when noted in the news letter. They are held in the tea room at 7:00 P.M, and coffee and pastry are usually provided. The meetings themselves generally last under an hour. We urge alumnus to try to attend one meeting per year. The association's sole purpose is to raise money to provide scholarships to those qualified seniors who are continuing their education. Any input an alumnus can provide at a meeting is always welcome.

Ongoing Fund Raisers

The DAA currently has two ongoing fund raising programs. They are:

  • Perpetual Fund
With this program, a minimum of a $25.00 donation will allow a person to have their name or the name of person so named, to be inscribed on a brass plate and attached to a wooden plaque on display in the public entrance hallway outside the tea room. There are several different donation levels on the plaque, and the brass plate can be move as donations accrue over time. All donations are tax deductible. Call Tom for more information.
  • Sponsors
We are always accepting sponsorship ads for this newsletter. For $25.00, your business card will be included in the newsletter for a one year period. For more details contact Dennis Abdow @ (508) 674-4552. We currently send out over 300 mailings a month.

Next Meeting

Thursday February 7, 2008 at 7:00 in the Diman Tearoom. Please join us.
