Greater Fall River Vocational School District Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School District Curriculum Accommodation Plan

OBJECTIVE: To provide assistance to regular education classroom teachers in analyzing and accommodating various students' learning needs.

INDIVIDUAL(S) RESPONSIBLE: Assistant Superintendent-Director/Principal, Administrative Staff

Strategies In Place.

  • Annual standardized testing in Grade 9.
  • Reading Assessment testing in Grades 9 or as recommended by teacher.
  • Ongoing analysis of MCAS tests using TEST WIZ software.
  • Department meetings.
  • Selection of textbooks that recognize and accommodate a variety of student learning needs.
  • Establishment of teacher assistance team (TAT).
  • Establishment of teacher mentoring program.

Strategies In Progress.

  • Teacher workshop on identifying and accommodating diverse learning styles (May 2003).
  • Workshop in Integration, Study Skills and Critical Thinking Skills (May 2003)

  • Provide staff development in instructional strategies that support differentiation in the classroom or shop.

OBJECTIVE: To provide support services that effectively manage student behavior

  • Continued utilization of School Resource Officer.
  • Training of school nurses.
  • Consultations with outside agencies.
  • Court and DSS referrals.
  • Teacher Assistance Team referrals.

  • In school Suspension Program and Saturday School for non-violent offenders.
  • After school detentions.
  • Use of Administrative referrals.
  • Creation of Crisis Management Policy Manual.
  • Provide new teachers with opportunities to discuss discipline issues and solutions with veteran teachers and administrators.

  • Annual staff training of safety policies as outlined in the Crisis Management Manual.
  • Faculty workshop on Sexual Harassment (May 2003).

  • Provide additional training in identifying behavioral issues and strategies to address them in the regular classroom or vocational setting.
  • Review of Crisis Management Policies to determine administrative procedures.
  • Provide workshops in identifying and working with the ADHD student.

OBJECTIVE: To provide direct and systematic English Language Arts and Mathematics instruction for all students

  • Block Schedule for all English Language Arts classes and Grade 9-10 Math Classes.
  • Remedial support through Title I programs.
  • Use of comprehensive literacy approaches in classroom.
  • Training of teachers in guided reading and creating leveled-book collections techniques.
  • On site training of teachers in Wilson reading techniques.
  • On site training of teachers in Math for effective practices and strategies.

  • Workshops/Conferences to support instruction in English Language Arts and Mathematics.
  • Review of texts for alignment to the Curriculum Frameworks.
  • Provide equity of instruction in reading in all ELA Classes.
  • Continue required reading and math assignments during vocational cycle to reinforce academic cycle lessons.
  • A annual “Book Fair” to promote literacy.

  • Continue to review the English Language Arts and Math series for content validity and adherence to the Curriculum Frameworks.
  • Provide staff training in English Language Arts and Mathematics.
  • Train additional staff members in remedial reading and Mathematics techniques.

  • Establishment of New Teacher Orientation Program.
  • Selection of teachers to attend D.O.E. Summer Mentoring Institutes.
  • Selection of teachers to serve in official capacity as mentors.
  • Mentors and Mentees meeting on a regular basis.
  • Mandatory quarterly Department Meetings.
  • Bi-annual Advisory Board Meetings

  • Continue to formally assign mentors to incoming new teachers.
  • Train additional staff at DOE summer mentoring institutes.
  • Development of a formal district mentoring policy.

  • Develop a more formalized mentoring program that follows new teachers through second and third year of teaching.

OBJECTIVE: To foster parental involvement

  • Annual Parent-Teacher conference.
  • Active School Councils.
  • Posting of information on the Diman Web-Site for parents.
  • Mid- term Progress reports issued to all students and mailed to parents.
  • Individual parent conferences arranged at parent or teacher request.

  • Establishment/expansion of the Boosters Club and the Parent Advisory Council.
  • Develop parental access through the website to view son or daughter's school records.
  • Increase parental involvement in defining policies for Special Education Council and Title I.
  • Presentation to parents on “Financial Aid" and other topics of interest.
  • Increase awareness of school activities in local newspapers, cable station, websites and local radio.

  • Increase use of school website to promote awareness and involvement.
  • Continue communication between parents and School Committee.

OBJECTIVE: To provide ongoing review and alignment of local curriculum in relation to state learning standards

  • Advisory Board review by discipline for appropriate alignment to the Curriculum Frameworks, the COP and trends in the workplace.

  • Professional Development opportunities for faculty to ensure continuation of the alignment process.
  • Department Heads and Lead Teachers trained in use of Curriculum Mapping.
