Movie Review: "Hairspray"

by Sarah Lima '08

I found the new musical Hairspray to be entertaining, but nowhere near as good as I would have expected for a show that has been closely compared to Grease. It's not a classic, or a film that will shock and amaze the world in such a way as to be a hit. It's not even the kind of movie that will last for generation upon generation. Instead, Hairspray's fame will probably only last for a short period of time, and die out with its target-age bracket.

Although not as good as I had hoped or expected, there is a good cast in this movie that would attract people of all ages. The music is catchy, upbeat, and entertaining. When and where a story took place, the reality of racism and segregation was put in a light that showed how wrong and completely ridiculous it was to treat people that way. Hairspray is a movie that proves that is you work hard and try, no matter who you are or what you look like, you can do it. Though comical and cute, the movie will probably not last to tell the tale to a new generation. It was good, but not great.
