Warm Hometown Hugs

Rachel Berryman '07

Above: Ms. Ellenwood's son, Spc. Rob Ellenwood and friends wear scarves sent from Diman and member of the Fall River Community.

Right before the holiday season, volunteers at Diman collected hand-knit, crocheted or store bought scarves in uniform colors for the soldiers stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan. In addition, brightly colored scarves were given to Iraqi children. Diman graduates and relatives stationed in Iraq were also included in the gift-giving spirit of the holiday. Ms. Karen Ellenwood from the LPN office was in charge of this. Ms. Ellenwood's son is currently stationed in Afghanistan. She wanted to do something kind for him and the other soldiers. The whole project started out as an email when Ms. Ellenwood sent her co-workers a message asking them for a wrapped scarf with a holiday card attached that could be sent as a greeting to a soldier. It ended up growing into a community wide project. Some of the donators included senior citizen groups, the Fall River Elks Club, Girl Scout troops, Fall River Ford, Dunkin Donuts (Globe St.), Wal- Mart (Swansea), and Diman students and faculty. Countless citizens helped by donating scarves, money, supplies, as well as their time.

"Warm Hometown Hugs," as it came to be called, was recognized by The Herald News and Channel 10 news. About 743 troops and about 300 Iraqi children received a scarf in time for the Holidays.

A "Thank You" from Afghanistan

from Karen Ellenwood, Special to The Tradesman

Karen,

I received all 26 boxes of the scarves this week. We had a battalion formation here at Sharana this morning and I handed them out to all the Soldiers, Airmen and civilians here. I am going to Lagman this weekend, where your son is working. I will be taking about 35 scarves with me to hand out down there. Also, I am sending 100 plus scarves to FOB KKC where our Charlie company and part of our Alpha company are living and working. There was such an amazing amount of work, time, money and effort involved for you and everyone else who did this for us. We sincerely appreciate the scarves and everything you have done for us.

Thanks again for all you have done for us and for supporting us all the way.

Sincerely,
CSM Richard Cartwright
