Ice Age 2: The Meltdown

Movie Review by Matthew Hale '08

Do you like funny movies? Do you like creatures from the Ice Age? If you answered yes to either of these questions, then Ice Age 2: The Meltdown is a must see. The Meltdown has three main characters, Sid the Megatherium, Diego the Smilodon, and Manny the Wooly Mammoth. Manny is worried that he is the only wooly mammoth left on earth, and all three are worrying that the enormous damn of ice surrounding their valley is going to melt and flood them. Together, the three prehistoric creatures try to move to higher ground, while Manny meets a rather strange mammoth, Ellie, who thinks she is an opossum. Another funny character, who was everyone's favorite in the first Ice Age movie, is Scrat, the saber-tooth Squirrel. Scrat constantly puts his life in jeopardy trying to get his acorn back (which he always loses).

One of the things that made this movie one of my new favorites was the dialogue. The characters say many "laugh out loud" comments throughout the movie. There are hidden meanings in some of the things that they say that only mature audiences really understand. One example is, after Manny finally convinces Ellie that she is a mammoth and not an opossum, he tries to convince her that together they could re-populate their species. Ellie doesn't understand at first, then she understands, and calls Manny a pervert for wanting to "re-populate" two minutes after she even realized she was a mammoth. Overall, the dialogue is amusing and makes this movie very funny.

If I could rate this movie on a scale of 1 to 10, I would give it an 8.8/10. It was a very funny movie, with an interesting plot and clean 3-D graphics. Some people might think this movie is just for children, but I'm sure that everyone will laugh out loud at least one time.
