Graphic Arts First Night

Rachel Berryman '07

I recently interviewed Crystal Soares of the Graphic Communications shop, who won a contest for designing a logo that was used for Fall River's First Night event on New Year's Eve. Crystal explained the events that led up to her winning idea: "After Mr. P (Panayakul) approached all the students in the Graphic Communications shop and told us about the contest to design the logo incorporating Fire and Ice for Fall River's First Night event, I started to write down ideas and research holiday designs with this theme in mind. With all the computer programs that the Graphic Communications shop offers, I was able to manipulate many different ideas into one."

Crystal's thoughts about winning? "I was surprised when I was told that my design had won. Upon going to City Hall and meting everyone involved with First Night, including Major Edward Lambert, I realized the amount of work and time that is involved in putting this entire event together."

About her idea, Crystal added, "Sometimes when you start off with a simple idea, you can add detail to make it more eye catching and appealing to every age group."

As to what inspired her design, Crystal replied, "I had to think of something for the entire holiday season, and snow was the first thing to come to mind. The fire is opposite and most people wouldn't normally combine the two together."

Everyone at Diman is very proud of Crystal, including her shop teacher, who commented, "Crystal did an excellent job. She utilized the software programs to her advantage."
