Becoming a Member of SkillsUSA: What Every Diman Student Needs to Know
Rachel Berryman '07
![]() Skills USA is a partnership of students, teachers, and employers, working together to make sure that America has a skilled work force. |
I'm sure some of you have heard Skills USA being talked about and most of you having no idea what it is. I had the chance to talk with Mr. Cabucio to clear up the confusion and let everyone know exactly what Skills USA is all about. Mr. Cabucio is an Office Technology Instructor and is also one of the Skills USA advisors, along with Mr. Oliveira from Machine Shop. According to Mr. Cabucio, "Skills USA is the only organization for students in technical, skilled and service careers, including health careers. It's designed for the student and run by the student. Your chapter chooses, plans and conducts its own activities."
Mr. Cabucio also stated some of the benefits of being a member of Skills USA: "Members develop into well-rounded people with technical, academic, and 'employability' skills. These skills not only help you get a job but also have a successful career.
You build these skills in every chapter, meeting, contest, leadership conference and activity." Any Sophomore, Junior or Senior may join Skills USA. In the past, students had to pay their own membership dues. But this year, Diman is a 100% participating school, meaning that Diman now pays the $20.00 per student fee for our entire qualifying student community. Contact your shop instructor for membership information and to locate the Skills USA Advisor for your shop.
